If you want to play offense in the recruiting game, you need to go where the decision-makers live. Coaches, athletic directors, and the wealthy alumni who fund scholarships don't spend their day scrolling through TikTok. They spend it on LinkedIn.

As a strength coach, I see athletes wait until they have a signed offer to act professional. That’s backwards. To get the offer, you have to prove you’re a pro first. This guide is your roadmap to building a LinkedIn presence that makes you the most "Recruitable" athlete in your region.

Instagram is for the fans. Twitter is for the media. LinkedIn is for the business of you. If you want to be treated like a professional athlete, you have to show up where the professionals are.

1. The Strategy: Networking with the "Decision-Makers"

Recruiting is a human business. Coaches are more likely to take a chance on an athlete if they have been recommended by an influential alumnus or a donor.

  • The "Alumni" Hack: Search for the university you want to attend. Find former players who now have successful careers. Connect with them.

  • The Pitch: "Hi [Name], I'm a Class of 2027 QB from London, ON, and I'm a huge fan of what you did at Western. I'm working to follow in those footsteps. Would you be open to a 5-minute chat about the transition from high school to the OUA?"

  • The Result: You aren't asking for a scholarship; you are asking for Mentorship. When the coach asks that alumnus about local talent, your name is the first one they mention.

2. The Setup: Your Digital Resume

Your profile needs to look like a pro's, not a student's.

  • The Headshot: No mirror selfies. Wear your team polo or a clean shirt. Look like someone a school would want as the "Face of the Program."

  • The Headline: Don't just put "Student." Put: "Elite [Sport] Prospect | Class of 2027 | 3.8 GPA | Pursuing [Major] at the University Level."
