How to Defend 1v1 in Soccer: Stop Getting Dribbled Past
The Mistake: "The Stab" (Diving In)
We all have that urge. The ball is right there. You think, "I can get that." So, you lunge. You stick your foot out to poke the ball away.
The Trap: Good attackers are waiting for you to do exactly that. The second you plant your foot to "stab" at the ball, you are stuck in the mud. You can’t move.
The Result: The attacker just pushes the ball past your stuck foot, and you are left watching their jersey number run away from you.

The Solution: "The Surfboard" (Jockeying)
Great defenders like Virgil van Dijk don't tackle unless they have to. They "Jockey." Imagine you are standing on a surfboard.
Knees Bent: You need to be low. If your legs are straight, you are slow.
Side-On Stance: Never face the attacker squarely (like a wall). Turn your body 45 degrees. This allows you to sprint backward or forward instantly.
The Cushion: Keep about an arm's length of distance. If you get too close, they spin you. If you are too far, they shoot.

The Drill: The "Shadow Game"
You can do this with a friend anywhere.
Setup: Make a narrow lane (5 yards wide) with cones.
The Attacker: Dribbles at 50% speed, trying to cross the line behind you.
The Defender: Put your hands behind your back (this stops you from grabbing).
The Goal: You cannot tackle. You just have to slide your feet and stay in front of them. Mirror their movement. If they go left, you slide right.
Level Up: Once you get good, the attacker goes 100% speed. See if you can force them out of bounds without ever touching the ball.
